The rules behind it

  • Article 107

    Each overtime hour is paid at the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic hourly wage.

  • Hourly wage

    The monthly wage, with fixed allowances, divided by 30 days and 8 hours. The premium uses the basic salary only.

  • Normal hours

    8 hours a day or 48 a week; 6 a day or 36 a week for Muslim employees in Ramadan. Work on rest days and official holidays also counts as overtime.

  • Limits

    Overtime needs the employee’s consent, and the executive regulations cap it at 720 hours a year unless the employee agrees to more.

How is overtime calculated in Saudi Arabia?

Hourly wage = (basic + fixed allowances) ÷ 30 ÷ 8. Each overtime hour pays that hourly wage plus half of the basic hourly wage (basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8 × 50%).

Is overtime 150% in Saudi Arabia?

Only when the salary has no allowances. With allowances, the premium is 50% of the basic hourly wage, not of the full wage, so the rate is lower than 150% of the full hourly wage.

Can an employee take time off instead of overtime pay?

The law sets pay. Some employers agree time off in lieu with the employee; check your contract and the regulations with a lawyer.
